Secure or Delete Your Account
Turn on two-factor sign-in so a password alone can't open your account, and know how to delete your account and everything in it if you ever want to leave.
Turn on two-factor sign-in
- 1
Get an authenticator app
Any app that shows 6-digit codes works: 1Password, Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Authy, or your phone's built-in passwords app.
- 2
Start the setup
Go to Profile → Two-factor authentication and click Set up two-factor. A QR code appears.
- 3
Scan it and enter a code
Scan the QR code with your authenticator app (or type in the key shown beside it), then enter the 6-digit code the app shows and click Turn on.
- 4
Sign in with a code from now on
After your password, UnderBudget asks for the current code from the app. Every device you sign in on asks once per sign-in. To turn it off, click Turn off on the same card.
Lost your phone? Without the authenticator you can't finish signing in, and a password reset still asks for a code. Keep the app backed up, or set it up on a second device with the same QR code while you have it open.
Change your password
On Profile → Sign-in and security, click Change password, enter your current password, then the new one twice. Asking for the current one means someone who gets hold of a signed-in device still can't lock you out. Forgot it? Use Forgot password on the sign-in page: the email's link lets you set a new one for an hour.
Delete your account
- 1
Open Delete account
Go to Profile → Delete account and click Delete account.
- 2
Check what goes
The dialog lists it: every bank connection (Plaid access is revoked), every account, transaction and balance, the review queue, your budget, categories, bills and split cost rules, your household and its expected income, your settings, and your sign-in itself.
- 3
Confirm
Type DELETE, enter your password and click Delete account. If you have two-factor on, you've already entered a code at sign-in. When it's done you're signed out.
Good to know
- Deleting can't be undone, and nothing is kept in the app afterwards.
- If a bank can't be disconnected right then, nothing is deleted. Try again in a moment, or disconnect it on Accounts first.
- Just want to stop syncing a bank? Disconnect it on Accounts instead; your history stays.
- Lost a phone, or signed in on a shared computer? Signing out only ends the session you're on, so use Profile → Sign out other devices to sign out everywhere else at once.
